Dry Brushing Isn’t Just for the Body—An Expert Explains Why You Should Do It to Your Face

November 17, 2020

Dry brushing your face may sound like a foreign concept—it did to me until recently.

Last week, I received a mailer from Daily Concepts, which included their brand new Daily Facial Dry Brush ($20). At first glance, I thought it was another body brush, but after looking closer I realized I wasn’t previously familiar with a product like this.

By now, wellness gurus know that dry brushing the body helps exfoliate dead cells from the skin surface and enhances blood flow. The drier the brush and skin, the more friction is increased to better exfoliate. As for dry brushing the face? Well, I imagine it has similar benefits.

Eager to learn more, I reached out to Daily Concepts’ founder, Emilio Smeke. Below, the skincare expert explains the benefits of dry brushing your face, and how to do it effectively.

skyelyfe: What, exactly, is a dry brush for the face?

Emilio Smeke: It’s a soft divide that will drain the lymphatic system starting in all the pathways we have in our face. It also helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles by exfoliating dead skin cells and stimulating circulation.

SL: How does a dry face brush differ from a dry body brush?

ES: They’re similar in their performance, yet really different in the level of abrasiveness of its components, making the facial a delicate brush that won’t be harsh on your skin.

SL: Is a dry face brush for everyone?

ES: If you have any breakouts or irritated, broken or sunburned skin, then this definitely should not be used. But in general, this is designed for all skin types.

SL: How do you properly use one?

ES: We’ve created a step-by-step process:

Step 1: Stroke along your lymphatic pathways

Step 2: Stroke downward along jawline

Step 3: Brush upwards along your cheeks

Step 4: Stroke around your eyes

Step 5: Brush forehead/nose downward

Step 6: Brush cheeks downward

Step 7: Brush neck downward

How to clean: Sprinkle cornstarch or clay powder and massage gently into bristles
