Jen Atkin Throws Her Version of Prom with a Very Hollywood Twist

May 10, 2017

No chaperones allowed!

Hair stylist to the stars Jen Atkin took things back to her youth last week by throwing Mane Addicts‘ Prom ’17, and (in her typical fashion) there was no shortage of Hollywood glitz and glam.

As expected, this was no typical prom–open bar and on a school night, just to give you a hint of how this all went down.

But aside from that, the event was held at new Hollywood hotspot Avenue, and guests (including Kaia Gerber, King and Queen Aaron Carpenter and Amanda Steele—and yours truly—to name a few) were treated to hairstyles at a Paul Mitchell Electric Youth station, cotton candy made from scratch, a DJ blaring today’s trendiest tunes, gift bags with Paul Mitchell hair product and a step-and-repeat for everyone’s photo-taking needs! And most classic of all, not a guest entered the private event without a canary yellow corsage on their wrist. Talk about festive!

But in case Young Hollywood’s elite needed to meet their “curfew,” rest assured the party was over by 10:00 p.m!

Mane Addicts & Rapunzel of Sweden Celebrate Hair Collaboration with Lavish Luncheon at SLS Beverly Hills

October 23, 2015

Rapunzel_of_Sweden_full_display_skyelyfeWine, gourmet bites and hair convo with the experts – talk about my kind of afternoon!

Reps from Rapunzel of Sweden hair extensions and Mane Addicts industry hair site were on hand Wednesday at Tres by Jose Andres at SLS Beverly Hills, to discuss their hair extension holder collaboration.

Hairstylists and media filled the room while having one-on-one discussions about how to perfectly style extensions and place them into hair with an all-natural look.

Rapunzel_of_sweden_mane_addicts_skyelyfeRapunzel of Sweden, a leading extension provider in Europe, is being newly introduced to the states. The brand, which creates hair in pretty much every color you can think of, is geared toward women in their twenties, and the locks are made to fasten in easily. The brand also produces wigs, hair care products and styling tools.

I walked out with my very own full-length clip-in extension piece. I need to play around with it and perhaps get it trimmed before going public, but I am excited for the added depth I know it will bring to my hair! And for those on-the-go experiences, I also received an extension holder, which will carry a brush, curling iron, etc…, and it comes with a hanger to make the curling process easier. And to top off the ultimate girlie gift bag? Fake eyelashes, of course!

It’s safe to say I’m ready to go glam for my next big night on the town!

Joico put on quite the hair affair Thursday night at The District by Hannah An, a new upscale Vietnamese eatery located at 8722 W. 3rd St. in L.A.

Dancing with the StarsPeta Murgatroyd hosted the event, which celebrated the launch of Joico’s new liquid-to-powder Hair Shake texturizing product. She was joined by the line’s celebrity hairstylist spokesperson Paul Norton of West Hollywood’s Sally Hershberger salon.

Guests at the fete noshed on delicious appetizers (I couldn’t stop stuffing myself with chicken skewers and other such delights), sipped on signature “Shaketini” cocktails, created slow motion hair-whipping videos and took in a hair demonstration by Paul. But the highlight of the bash was certainly the private shimmy attendees got to witness from Peta (you can view it on my Instagram right here). Everyone left the event with a bag of goodies, including (obviously) the brand new product!

Pamper, Shop & Eat in Malibu During 2015 at Three Brand New Hotspots!

December 17, 2014

Even if you live on the westside, Malibu is still a trek. So coming from where I hail in West Hollywood is no hop, skip and a jump from the sunny skies that rest over L.A.’s most upscale beach city. But I recently headed that direction (twice in one week!) to check out some new spots that just opened.

Here’s the thing: During the fall and winter, you don’t get the traffic you would during those hellish summer trips, so aside from the distance itself, the drive is pretty much smooth sailing. And add in the fact that many people are away on holiday break, you kind of get the city to yourself! I love Malibu during holiday season. Everything is lit up and the town is chillier than usual. There are so many adorable shops filled with fun, friendly people bundled up and frolicking along with their families. Quite cozy! So when I checked out a new salon, boutique and restaurant in the area recently, I had such an enjoyable experience.

So grab a pal, take a little road trip west and experience the city the same way I did!

Located at the trendy Malibu Country Mart, Cie Sparks salon recently opened its doors, courtesy of stylist Michael Sparks and colorist Heather Cie, proteges of Jennifer Aniston‘s stylist Chris McMillan. Formerly McMillan Canale Salon, the renovated space is located next door to Mr. Chow.

Earlier this month, the salon hosted a VIP styling day to celebrate its October launch. With an endless flow of champagne and an assortment of sweet treats to nosh on, guests were offered cuts, blowouts and other lavish treatments. I opted for a wavy blowout from stylist Ricky Reyes, who had my hair looking good as new! I even walked away with a little gift – a set of their Inphenom superior treatment shampoo + conditioner. No lie, this is the first shampoo and conditioner combo that has worked for me from home in a long time!

With your hair in check, head a little more west to the continuously expanding Trancas Country Market, which just opened this past summer.

Already home to Drill Surf & Skate, Sea Lily and Pritchett-Rapf realty, the space recently welcomed a new addition: Malibu Beach House boutique. The homey spot, owned by married couple Doug and Laura Burdge, carries everything from Bed Head PJs, to Nest fragrances.

The location also boasts its own signature line of Bloody Mary mix and candles – two things I so graciously walked away with as gifts when I attended an intimate launch event earlier this month at the shop. The Bloody Mary mix went perfectly with my tomato-flavored Belvedere vodka I’d been trying to use for months. And the candles are a must! They come in eight different ocean-themed aromas, including Point Dume, Zuma and Malibu’s 90265 zip code. I like the candles so much that I included them in skyelyfe’s holiday gift guide.

Doug designed not only this store, but also the entire market as a part of Burdge & Associates Architects. Known as Malibu’s signature architect, Doug is recognized for his Spanish Mediterranean, “Rustic-Modern” and cutting-edge contemporary styles.

After a long day of pampering and shopping, a relaxing meal (and a glass of wine!) seems the next logical step. Located directly next door to Malibu Beach House is Mangia, another new addition to Trancas Country Market. I had the luxury of indulging in a decadent tasting of some of the eatery’s finest wines and dishes, including a rich Tartufo risotto, simmering meat lasagna, carbonara pasta and various pizzas (I’m stuffed just thinking about it). The restaurant, which includes a full bar and patio overlooking the hills of Malibu, was founded by Antonio Alessi and Tarcisio Mosconi, the owners of local Tra di Noi.

PRIV: LA’s Premier Pampering App Brings Services to Your Doorstep

September 17, 2014

Remember the good ol’ days when showing up in a Town Car somewhere made you feel really, really important? Well, then Uber came along and gave that VIP feeling to anyone with a credit card.

Similarly, I remember attending one of my first ever gifting suites and receiving a gift card for a (gasp) complimentary at-home spray tan from Sevin Nyne. I mean, only celebs received such glamorous at-home services, right? Well, now, like as in the case with Uber, just a simple cell phone app tap and valid credit card will have you receiving star-like perks.

As of Sept. 18, L.A.’s first full-service on-demand beauty and wellness application was made available to the masses. Everything from vetted personal trainers to masseuses, hairstylists, manicurists and spray-tanning specialists can show up at your doorstep with the click of a button on PRIV, an app (short for PRIVileged) founded by Joseph Terzi and Morris Sutton. Like with Uber, available service providers pop up on a screen with their current rating out of five stars, along with how many minutes should be expected until their arrival.

I was on hand last week to help celebrate the launch of this innovative product at the ultra chic Petit Ermitage hotel in West Hollywood. Before I got to the event, my close friend (and hairstylist) Erick Orellana gave me a glamorous updo from his apartment, and then I was off to the party. Once I arrived, I met up with a bunch of friends and I was fed with an array of healthy bites catered by the hotel. Guests at the fete were also treated to complimentary manis and Priv-logoed nic-nacs, including fans (it was unbelievably hot outside) and iPhone cases. In between trips to the open bar, people crowded the massive candy station, which was purple-themed to match the shade of the brand’s logo. M&Ms, saltwater taffy and lollipops were available in great quantities for guests to scoop into baggies.

Upon exiting the event, partygoers were given gift bags with additional logoed memorabilia, along with a gift card for $20 off a Priv service. Sans the overbearing heat, this was a night nicely done.

Will you try out this app?
