Last night was a celebratory time in Hollywood for those partaking in Golden Globes festivities – but amid the laughs and free flowing champagne came tragic news that the industry lost one of its most iconic legends, David Bowie.
The musician-actor-artist died yesterday at the age of 69 after losing a private battle with liver cancer. He just so happened to release his final album Blackstar two days before his passing, and I’ve included the song “Lazarus” in this week’s New Music Monday playlist.
While Bowie’s track is definitely the standout this week, there’s also some fresh material from Wild Belle, Wet, Teen Daze, Mowe, Moons of Mars, Anderson Paak and an old-school favorite, Boosie Badazz.
If you’re a fan of Wild Nothing (who is also on the list), you may also enjoy Sunflower Bean‘s track “Easier Said,” (included on here as well) which has a melody very reminiscent of the dream-pop band’s sound.
Listen below for a playlist of 18 new songs, which also includes Pete Yorn, Above & Beyond and Brodinski featuring Theophilus London.
And may you rest in peace, Mr. Bowie.
Carly Rae Jepsen is on a roll!
Her new releases continue to be totally on point, as she proves with last month’s “Run Away with Me,” and now her latest, “Warm Blood,” which is a little dark and mysterious while still providing one of her catchy signature hooks. It’s the perfect kickoff to this week’s New Music Monday selection. Her latest are set to appear on her third studio album “Emotion.”
And while on the subject of pop, check out the DJ Mustard-produced “Sorry to Interrupt,” by Jessie J, Jhene Aiko and Rixton. RAC and Madi Diaz‘s happy-go-lucky “Falling Hard” will make you smile, and Kate Boy‘s “Midnight Sun” will make you dance. And YG‘s “Twist My Fingaz” reminds me of that classic west coast rap sound from the ’90s.
Otherwise, this week’s playlist is mostly mellow. Chet Faker and Banks make an excellent team on their “1998” collaboration, while Teen Daze‘s “Along” is perfect little jam for winding down your day, and Cannons‘ “Body Talk” is slow and sexy.

This past weekend’s TBD Fest in Sacramento was one 2014 music event I was so sad to miss. I’ve had my sights set on this since it was officially announced at the beginning of the summer. From RAC, Empire of the Sun and Goldroom, to Teen Daze, Ghost Beach, Keys N Krates and many, many more, I seriously cannot imagine a better lineup. I’m super bummed that I couldn’t make it, but either way, I still gave this extravaganza its much deserved recognition by putting a 30-song playlist together so that I could feel like I was there in spirit and share the talents of such great artists with my readers.
